Principal's Letter for the 2018-2019 School Year

                                                                                                                                                                                          August 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Welcome to Sun Valley High School where students are challenged to achieve beyond their personal goals. Sun Valley offers students opportunities to enhance their growth intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Our goal is to show our Valley Pride through focused and engaged learning, social and emotional maturity and support, and meaningful involvement in clubs, service, athletics, and the arts.

Please become familiar with the school’s website as it will provide important information for students and parents throughout the school year. The web address appears in the heading of this newsletter. In addition, our electronic system (phone & e-mail) will be used to communicate important messages during the school year. Finally, follow our school on Twitter @SVPrincipalps where we post about our students’ achievements and the day-to-day successes here in the Valley. We appreciate your involvement in the Sun Valley High School and your support of our programs.

Student Information Sheets

In lieu of sending out new Student Information Sheets to each family, please contact us at 610-497-6300 or at with any changes to the information that appears on your child’s information record; such as: phone number, e-mail address, mailing address, or emergency contacts.  Sun Valley communications are sent out regularly using the numbers and e-mail addresses in our system, so please update them with us if there is a change. In addition, we can only communicate student information with parents/guardians who are listed with these privileges in our system. Thank you for taking the time to update with us if a change has occurred since last school year.

Back to School Night

Meet the Teacher Night in the high school is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to meet the high school teachers and review course expectations. Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to attend.  Our school counselors will be presenting on college-specific topics; a local agency will be providing information on the dangers of vaping for teens; and we will have tables set up for the Sun Valley PTL, Jostens, and Kelly Services (staffing).

Sun Valley Parent Teacher League (PTL)

The Parent Teacher League is a group of high school parents who meet regularly to discuss school issues and programs. All parents/guardians are encouraged to attend these meetings. The first meeting is Tuesday, September 11 from 5-5:30 pm in the Sun Valley Main Office. A PTL-specific e-mail will be coming soon! Please make sure we have your correct e-mail by contacting our main office!

The Pennsylvania Act 84 of 2015 requires that public and nonpublic schools receive electronic notice of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) on an annual basis to be shared with every parent or guardian of every student enrolled in the district during the school year.

Please review the CHIP flyer to learn more about this opportunity. The flyer and many more resources can be found on the CHIP website at, under CHIP resources. If you would like to speak to a CHIP representative, please contact the CHIP customer service center at 1-800-986-KIDS(5437).

Student Parking

The staff & student parking lot will be significantly impacted during the extent of the renovation projects. For the 2018-2019 school year, we are limited to fifty-five (55) student spaces. The remainder of our spaces will be reserved for our teachers, support staff, paraprofessionals who are required to drive to school and construction workers and contractors who will be working during school hours to complete our classroom projects in the MIC and ‘B’ Hallway.

Since there are limited student spaces, we are making the 55 spaces available to SENIORS ONLY on a “first come, first served” basis. Seniors who wish to park must bring a photocopy (we will not copy these items for you) of the following:

*student driver’s license (cannot be expired)             *proof of insurance (cannot be expired)

*registration (cannot be expired)                                *$25.00 (cash or check made out to PDSD)

…to Mrs. Lessik in the athletics office. Mrs. Lessik will be available in her office on Sept. 4-7th from 7:15 am to 3:15 pm. After September 7th, if spaces remain to be sold, Mrs. Lessik’s hours will be 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Parking space sales will occur until all 55 parking tags are sold.

Student Lockers

We will be limited on the number of student lockers we can offer until the projects are complete. To start the school year, we will be providing the entire 9th grade class with a locker and combination in the ‘C’ Hallway. If students entering grades 10-12 have a need for a locker, one can be requested by seeing Mrs. Raymond in the main office. ALL Sun Valley students will have a locker available in the Spring of 2019.

Modular Classrooms

Until March 2019, we will operate with 12 modular classrooms outside the ‘C’ wing exit (Duttons Mill Road side) while the two phases of the ‘B’ wing renovations occur. Each modular classroom is equipped with bells, fire alarms, PA system, door locks (interior & exterior), projection equipment, and a whiteboard. There are no bathrooms or water fountains inside the “Mods” so, students and staff will use the ‘C’ wing for those two needs.

The following teachers will start the school year in a modular classroom:

Mr. Baron, Ms. Carstensen, Dr. Page, Mrs. Grady, Mrs. Soring, Mrs. deRitis, Ms. Kowalski, Mr. Dobbins, Mr. Egleston, Mr. Malaczewski, Ms. Potter, and Mr. Bondanza.

Construction Areas and Hallway Traffic

At the start of the school year, half of the ‘B’ wing will be an active construction zone and therefore, closed off from our students, staff, and visitors.

  • Students who have classes in the ‘B’ wing (1st & 2nd floor) should walk to the end of the front hallway, towards the nurse’s office and turn LEFT.
  • Students who have classes in the ‘C’ wing or in a modular classroom should use the ‘D’ wing hallway to access these areas.
  • Students are not permitted to enter the construction areas that are blocked off by temporary walls and doors.

School Attendance/Vacations

Students are responsible for completing make-up work during or after an absence. Vacation is not an acceptable absence, and we encourage families to schedule vacations around the school calendar. The Penn-Delco School District has pre-scheduled the following school holidays and teacher in-service days that can be found here.

Use of Cell Phones & Ear Buds/Headphones

Use of cell phones/electronic device in the 21st century can be a positive tool for communication and production. The goal of Sun Valley High School is to guide students towards appropriate use of a variety of devices.  Student cell phone use in Sun Valley classrooms is reserved only for educational purposes that cannot be experienced through use of a laptop or Chromebook. Therefore, unless otherwise directed by a teacher, counselor, staff member, or administrator, student cell phones (and ear buds) will be away in a bookbag, pocket, or locker during class time. Violations of this expectation will be considered a classroom disturbance.

Dress Code

Sandals must have a strap or support on the heel in order to be worn in school.  Slides are not permitted to be work in school.

Eligibility for School Events

All school-sponsored events, including but not limited to class dances/proms, volleyball marathon, PRIDE picnic, and attendance at & participation in athletic events and activities are subject to eligibility standards which includes academics (cannot be failing 2 or more classes) and attendance (privilege is lost on the 6th unexcused absence).

Students must be present in school by 10:15 am, and remain in school all day, to be eligible for athletics and extracurricular events, practices, meetings, and contests. This time is a change from last year’s time of 11:15 am.

I look forward to the upcoming school year and working with you and your children. If you have questions about topics listed above, please contact the high school office at 610-497-6300.

High School Principal
