Message from the Principal
Dear Pennell Elementary Parents/Guardians,
It is with great excitement that I welcome the beginning of the 2019-20 school year! Pennell’s student body is an incredible group of kind and talented young men and women that we as a staff are absolutely blessed to educate. Personally, I could not have felt more warmly-welcomed by the Pennell Community during my first year as Pennell’s Principal. It was an honor for me to begin building relationships with all of our Pennell students and their family members. As we continue to work together this year and into the future, I welcome every opportunity for us to get to know one another to help me better understand the context of our children’s lives outside of school. Aston is an amazing community that I am so proud to represent!
In alignment with the Penn-Delco School District’s mission statement, we at Pennell are tasked with ensuring that our students achieve, succeed, and excel in school and beyond. Pennell Elementary is proud to be a school that achieves academic excellence, fosters a positive learning environment, and works with parents and guardians as partners in each child’s education.
As principal, I am proud to lead a staff that I am confident is one of the most of talented and qualified in the county. Teachers at Pennell provide students with rigorous instruction aligned to state standards and high expectations within our building. Pennell teachers are constantly refining their craft through district and personal professional development in addition to the school-based goal-setting and trainings I lead in partnership with other administrators and staff. Providing high quality, differentiated instruction to all our learners is a primary focus and point of pride at Pennell Elementary. Academic success is tradition at Pennell and will continue during the 2019-20 school year!
Pennell Elementary School is state recognized for its dedication to creating a positive environment for students and staff. During the 2017-18 school year, Pennell earned state recognition as a school that implements positive behavior programming (PBIS) with fidelity. This award acknowledges the school community’s commitment to enhancing the behavioral, emotional, and social skill development of our students. Core values and behavioral expectations are integrated within the students’ education school-wide. Students are recognized daily and monthly for modeling these positive values where students cherish our school values of being “respectful, responsible, and safe!”
Pennell would not be the incredible elementary school it is without parents, guardians, and family members as partners in our students’ education. The Pennell Elementary PTO has a long history of supporting the needs of students and staff to ensure that each child has a positive experience in elementary school that builds a foundation for a successful life. I encourage the school community to support their efforts and be actively involved. PTO fundraisers directly support assemblies, events, and items for the students. For example, every student will receive a 2019/2020 Pennell T-Shirt to wear to school or special events and will be paid for by the Pennell PTO.
In summary, I could not be more excited to welcome your children for the 2019-20 school year. Please follow our adventures and interact with us this school year on Twitter using @PDSD_Pennell and #PennellPRIDE.
Sincerely,
Joshua Leight
