Matthew Fifer places first in essay contest
The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU), along with the Veterans Legacy Project (VLP), announced winners of the 2023 Veterans Day Essay Contest and their first place winner Northley Middle School 8th grade student Matthew Fifer.
Matthew's essay addressed the meaning and history of Veteran's day and why recognizing our veterans is an important part of being a good citizen. Matthew used Mr. Bob Diamond, former mayor and council member of East Landdown Borough, is an example of a servant who gave up graduating from high school to serve in the Korean War.
"We should celebrate people like Bob and many other people who are considered heroes for serving America," wrote Matthew. "People like them risk their lives so we can live ours. It's a great risk they take and we underestimate what they do because we can live without worry."
Matthew and his teacher, Dr. Kathleen DiMichele, along with his family, have been invited as honored guests to attend the Veterans Day Parade in Media Borough on November 10. Matthew and the second and third place winners from E.T. Richardson Middle School and Penn Wood Middle School will all read their essays following the parade at the event.
