Community Speaker Series begins in October

 speaker series announcement
Penn-Delco School District is proud to present a speaker series that offers parents insight into some of the most difficult challenges facing them today. Join us as we feature professionals in behavioral sciences who will share trends affecting the mental and physical health of our children. All three presentations are FREE and will be held in the Northley Middle School Auditorium.

The first speaker event will be on Monday, October 28 at 6:30pm.   Bridget Marley, Prevention Specialist II from Holcomb Behavioral Health will address the changes in the tobacco industry and their targeting of a new generation of users.  Challenges posed by vaping and its impact on health and legislation will also be discussed.

The effects of social isolaton on mental health are overwhelmingly negative.  On Tuesday, January 14, Dr. Caroline Fenkel, LCSW will talk with parents about how we can prevent isolation in our young people.  She will address causes of chronic isolation and will guide parents in ways they can help their teens to break the isolation cycle.

We'll end our speaker series on Tuesday, March 10 with a program addressing anxiety, stress and its effect on children.  Dr. Michael Nakkula of the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education will address his teaching and research focus on the development of resilience and the promotion of possibility development among children and youth.  He is particularly interested in the integration of counseling, mentoring, and educational processes that allow students to thrive in school and during transition to higher education and career.

Dr. George Steinhoff is excited to help deliver these opportunities for learning and conversation for the Penn-Delco community.

"Penn-Delco wants to partner with parents to provide opportunities to learn more about solutions for problems that students and families may face.  Better outcomes happen whenever school and home share efforts that are good for kids.  I hope parents can make some time in their busy schedules to attend some of the sessions, if they are applicable.  We welcome anyone in the community."

For convenience, a few of these presentations may be combined with scheduled PTL meetings.  Refreshments will be served.  No sign-up necessary.  Just show up!
