Northley student heads to national spelling bee for third consecutive year

Stay tuned as Northley eighth grader Phoebe Smith heads back to the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee beginning on Monday, May 27th. Phoebe is speller number 375 out of 565 spellers headed to the Gaylord National Resort and convention Center in National Harbor Maryland. More than 11 million students across the country (and the world!) have competed in the last several months with the goal of landing at the national bee. Phoebe will endure three rounds of preliminary competition through May 29th. If she qualifies, she'll be one of 50 spellers in the finals that begin on May 30 televised on ESPN2. Phoebe is not new to the competition. This will be here third year competing. In 2017 she placed 189th, and last year saw an 11th place finish, missing out on the word cabalassou (a giant armadillo). The top seven winners receive cash prizes, with the winner enjoying a $50,000 award as well as trips to NYC and Hollywood to appear on day time and late night TV. Stay tuned as we follow Phoebe's journey at the Bee!
