Sun Valley Cell Phone Expectations for 2026-2027

Sun Valley Cell Phone Expectations for 2026-2027

Beginning with the start of the 2026-2027 school year, Sun Valley will implement updated expectations regarding student cell phone use during the school day.

This change reflects a balanced approach to technology by limiting device use during instructional time while continuing to allow students access before school, between classes, during lunch, and after school.

What is changing?

Students will not be permitted to use cell phones during instructional periods, including classes, study halls, or other supervised learning environments. The use of AirPods, headphones, and other devices that are not an essential part of instruction is also prohibited during these times.

Students will continue to have access to their devices during lunch and while transitioning between classes.

Students will be expected to silence or turn off their devices and place them in the classroom phone storage area upon arrival to each scheduled class period. Devices may not be retrieved during class, including for restroom use.

Why are we making this change?

Our goal is to create a learning environment where students can focus, participate, and engage without the distractions that personal devices can create. Limiting cell phone use during instructional time supports student attention, classroom participation, and a positive school environment.

This change is not about eliminating technology. It is about ensuring students are fully present during instruction while continuing to allow appropriate access to devices during non-instructional times.

These updated expectations also align with broader discussions taking place across Pennsylvania and the country regarding student cell phone use in schools.

Supporting a smooth transition

We recognize this may be a significant change for many of our returning students. During the opening weeks of school, teachers and administrators will review these expectations with students and help them adjust to this new routine.

We also ask for your partnership by discussing these expectations with your student before the first day of school.

Need to reach your child during the school day?

We understand that families occasionally need to communicate with their children during the school day. Families may contact the school's main office if an urgent message needs to be delivered to a student.
