What is Reading Counts?
Scholastic Reading Counts! is an independent reading program which combines reading practice and software-based reading assessment. Reading and comprehending text are critical to the learning process. Surrounding students with a wide variety of literature, fiction, and nonfiction texts is a first step to inspiring lifelong readers. Pairing these choices with a supportive program that keeps students coming back for more creates strong independent readers.

How does Reading Counts work?
Students self-select books to read independently. Once the reading of the book is complete, students login to the Scholastic Reading Counts! Program to take a quiz to demonstrate comprehension. The program tracks the students’ success on the books they have read. The students receive instant feedback and monitoring of their progress to help them become successful independent readers.
The quizzes consist of 10 multiple choice questions and students must obtain a score of 70% to pass. If a child gets less than 7 correct, they may retake the quiz up to two more times. The child is required to wait 24 hours before the quiz can be retaken. Students are given opportunities throughout their day to take quizzes on the computer.

Book not on the list? A student can write an independent summary for a book that is not on the Scholastic Reading Counts booklist. The amount of words for the book will be added to the student’s total word count.

Who is eligible for Reading Counts?
Generally students begin the Reading Counts Program when they are in 2nd Grade, however if a teacher and parent believe a student's reading ability and comprehension are ready prior to 2nd grade an assessment can be performed by the teacher to determine eligibility. Students in first grade are typically introduced to Scholastic Reading Counts in January.
