Dear Parents and Guardians,
It is hard to believe January is over and February has started!  My first month as the principal of Aston Elementary School has been fantastic! I have met many of our students and their families and look forward to meeting the rest of the students and families in the next several months.  Your children might have told you - I spend a lot of time in classrooms as well as in the cafeteria.  It has really helped me to gain a sense of the Aston School Community and the individuals who make it work.
Many of our staff and families participated in Aston in Action night - what a fun night!  There are several photographs from the event in the February newsletter - be sure to check it out!  We are staying active and are just about ready to go with a modified version of 4th and 5th grade sports.  With the help of Mrs. Johnson, the PE teacher, we have developed a sports time in which a class will have an opportunity to compete in a friendly basketball match against another class.  Students must complete their school work and follow school rules in order to be a part of the games.
The month of February finds us all working hard to continue our progress toward academic success in all subject areas.  We just completed MAPS testing and state testing is right around the corner.  The winter weather is very unpredictable, but hopefully we will get all of our school days in.
Finally, we are at the half way point for Reading Counts.  We honored several students for reaching the 500,000 word mark and the 1,000,000 word mark.  We even had a few students read over 2,000,000 words!  The students know there is a surprise celebration in the works at the end of the year for all who reach their goal.  Please encourage your children to read every night to help them reach their Reading Counts goal!
