Sun Valley High School educates approximately 1,100 students in grades nine through 12. The high school offers a variety of academic programs and learning opportunities. A wide range of vocational, technical arts, business, foreign language, family and consumer science, and college preparatory classes are offered.
Fourteen Advanced Placement courses are available in a variety of subject areas. Students are also offered the opportunity to participate in a half-day vo-tech program in such areas as electronics, information systems, automobile mechanics, food management and more. Sun Valley has an articulation agreement with the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology to provide technology courses to our students. Over 90% of our recent graduates attend institutions of higher learning. $9.4 million in scholarships were awarded to our students over the past several years.
A photography lab, planetarium, instructional media center, television center, Internet preparation and computer service repair lab, career center and computer-assisted drafting lab are available to students in the high school. In addition, as part of a Career Exploration Program, seniors may pursue a variety of out of school activities and experiences. During the last four weeks of school, they utilize community resources (business, industry, professionals, and more) as an extension of their learning environment to gain insights outside of the school setting.
The high school has several programs in place to enhance school climate. A Peer Mediation Program helps students to learn how to solve their own problems. A mental health counselor is employed full time in the high school. For those students for whom a regular school program has been unsuccessful, Sun Valley provides an Alternative Education Program. The Student Assistant Program is designed to identify high-risk students.
Sun Valley prides itself on the number of opportunities for students in the area of extracurricular activities. Our athletic program provides students with a wide variety of sports.
