Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth:
Giving New Direction to Students “At Risk”

The Penn-Delco School District believes that students need skills that require them to:

  • Become self-directed learners;
  • Employ problem-solving and decision-making skills;
  • Attain communication and group interaction skills;
  • Express themselves creatively;
  • Utilize skills necessary to adapt to and create change;
  • Enhance and sustain self esteem; and
  • Demonstrate concern, tolerance, and respect for others.
 
Students are referred to the Alternative Education Program by a team of administrators and guidance counselors for:
  • Disregard for school authority: persistent violation of school policy rules;
  • Display or use of controlled substances on school property or during school affiliated activities;
  • Violent or threatening behavior on school property or during school related activities;
  • Possession of a weapon on school property as defined under 18 PA C.S. Section 912;
  • Commission of a criminal act on school property;
  • Misconduct that would merit suspension or expulsion under school policy; and
  • Habitual truancy.

Program Features:

  • Therapeutic group counseling and individual counseling sessions;
  • Professional staff of highly qualified, dedicated teachers holding PA certifi cation;
  • Small class size and modified schedule;
  • Differentiated instruction and use of technology;
  • Behavior modification plan with incentives;
  • Life skills, career planning, and college advising.
