It appears that the weather has finally changed. The trees have finally shed their leaves, our students should now be accustomed to the Northley way, and teachers have found their groove after many changes. To recap a few things we worked through the first eleven weeks, we changed our schedule from last year, began renovations which necessitated the movement of a number of teachers, went through our Schools To Watch visit, and conducted over 475 conferences of which half were Student Led in 6th grade.
Our school was visited November 15th by a seven member team to see if we are a “School to Watch.” The feedback I received from parents, students, teachers, and central administration was positive. Furthermore, the visiting committee chair said that of all his visits our students took the most ownership of any other school. Another committee member said that we had the most polite students. He continued by describing how our students would approach him, ask how his day was going, inquire to see how we were doing, and wish him a good day. This was all done in the halls between classes where no staff member could see or direct the student. This speaks highly of not only our students but the way in which they were reared.
Through the change in the conference structure, our 7th and 8th grade teachers were able to meet with more parents of students who need additional supports while still visiting with the parents who requested a conference. The Student Led Conferences allowed for the 6th grade teachers to meet with every parent who requested or was invited. Though this was an opportunity for parents and teachers to connect and discuss their student’s successes and challenges, each student’s progress will be greatly impacted by the assistance they receive outside of the school. While our goal is to educate the whole student academically, socially, and emotionally, we need you to stay connected on a day to day basis with your student. Here are a few ways this can be accomplished:
At least once a week:
Though the Holidays are upon us and we are focused on finding the perfect gift, spend time with those we care about most.
Enjoy the season,
